What we are looking for

An energetic and experienced community engagement specialist and team leader, who is passionate about developing and maintaining relationships with members of the communities, and who has already established some relationships in communities within the Western Cape. The ideal candidate will be from any of the communities and must have a good understanding of how communities operate. This role involves both regular office hours as well as weekend and after-hours availability as needed, depending on business requirements.

About the role

This role will report to the Director of Community Engagement and will play a vital role in building and nurturing strong relationships with communities in South Africa’s townships.  This individual will lead and support a team, facilitate collaboration across departments, and ensure effective community outreach initiatives.  They will also handle planning, administrations, documentation, and reporting, ensuring alignment with TooMuchWifi’s mission and values.

What you will be doing

  • Community Engagement and Outreach
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local community leaders, stakeholders, and residents.
  • Identify community needs and opportunities for impactful engagement initiatives.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the Company and the community, ensuring open and transparent communication.
  • Represent the Company at community meetings, events and forums.
  • Team Leadership and Support
  • Lead and support the Community Engagement team to achieve department and Company goals.
  • Establish a collaborative and motivated team environment aligned with the Company’s values.
  • Collaboration 
  • Work closely with other departments such as Commercial, Customer Operations and Network to align community efforts with the Company’s goals.
  • Facilitate cross-functional initiatives that enhance community impact.
  • Planning and Administration
  • Plan and execute community outreach programs and events in line with the Company’s priorities.
  • Manage schedules and logistics for community events.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare detailed reports on all activities, team performance, and feedback from the communities.

Minimum requirements (qualifications, skills and experience, other)

  • Any relevant post matric qualification in the field of social development, business development or economics such as Humanities Studies, Social Development Psychology or Political Studies will be advantageous.
  • 3 years of experience in community engagement, outreach, non-profit initiatives, or similar roles.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in the Xhosa language will be an advantage.
  • Ability to work effectively in diverse cultural contexts.
  • Passionate about making a difference.
  • Empathetic and culturally sensitive.
  • Self-motivated, with a strong sense of accountability and integrity.
  • Willingness to travel and work within township communities using their own transport.
  • Ability to weekends and after-hours as needed.
