Design Engineer (Roads & Transportation)

TOBIN, An AtkinsRéalis Company, is seeking a skilled and motivated Design Engineer to join our Roads & Transportation team in any of our 5 locations across Ireland.

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious Civil Engineer looking to advance their career while contributing to the planning and design of key transport infrastructure projects across Ireland. Working as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will be involved in the delivery of road, active travel, public realm, and transportation projects that help improve connectivity, enhance safety, and support sustainable mobility.

We require a Level 8 Honours Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent), along with approximately 3 to 6 years' experience in the design and delivery of roads, transportation, and civil infrastructure projects.

As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will support the planning, design and delivery of a wide range of transportation projects, including road improvement schemes, active travel infrastructure, junction upgrades, public realm developments and associated civil engineering works. You will produce high-quality technical designs while benefiting from ongoing mentorship and structured career development.

As a Design Engineer, you will:

• Liaise with clients and key stakeholders, under the direction of Project Managers, to support the successful delivery of transportation and infrastructure projects.
• Assist in the design and delivery of roads, highways, active travel, public realm and transportation-related schemes.
• Review and provide guidance on design documents prepared by Graduate Engineers.
• Prepare and review preliminary designs, technical reports, calculations, drawings and detailed specifications using industry-standard software.
• Undertake geometric road design, earthworks design, drainage coordination, and associated civil engineering design tasks.
• Utilise AutoCAD 2D and Civil 3D for the preparation and development of engineering designs and drawings.
• Support the preparation of planning applications, tender documentation and contract documents.
• Assist with tender evaluations, cost assessments and procurement activities.
• Contribute to contract administration and site support activities to ensure compliance with design intent, programme and budget requirements.
• Collaborate closely with Project Managers, senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality project outcomes.

We are seeking candidates who possess:

• A Level 8 Honours Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• Approximately 3 to 6 years' relevant experience in roads, transportation or civil infrastructure design.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D and Civil 3D.
• Experience in the design of road, highway, active travel or transportation infrastructure projects.
• Knowledge of relevant design standards including TII, DMURS, NTA and other Irish roadway design guidance.
• Working knowledge of Public Works Contract forms (PW-CF) and construction contract administration.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Project and other planning and design software.
• A willingness to develop skills in BIM platforms and other engineering software.
• Strong technical capability, attention to detail and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
