Location:Hybrid/ Derby office

Salary: £57,881 to £67,804

Contract: Full time 36.5 hours per week

This role provides support for strategic and operational leadership in apprenticeships, assessment strategy, and qualifications development, ensuring alignment between AIM’s overarching strategy and operational delivery. The postholder will lead the management teams and deputise for the Director as and when required, ensuring a coordinated and effective approach to awarding activities.

What you will be doing

1.      To contribute to the Senior Leadership Team with activities that include supporting the Director of Awarding and Regulations to:

1.1. Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of operational and strategic objectives.

1.2. Contribute to the delivery directorate level outcomes within operational budget.

1.3. Contribute to risk management activities including leading on regulatory risk management of qualifications, centres, assessors and associates

1.4. Oversee resource planning, budgeting, and scheduling for qualification and apprenticeship development.

1.5. Ensure the best use of financial resources, including managing external associates such as subject experts, examiners, and assessors.

1.6. Develop and implement cost-effective strategies for scaling AIM’s awarding and apprenticeship operations.

1.7. Deputise for the Group Director of Awarding and Regulations when required

1.8. Coordinate and provide oversight on the production of the report to the board of trustee by providing an accurate analysis of all data required in relation own functional area.


2.      Strategic Leadership of Qualifications and Apprenticeship

2.1. Develop and lead the strategic vision for qualification development and end-point assessment, ensuring alignment with AIM’s commercial, regulatory, and educational objectives.

2.2. Ensure AIM’s qualification portfolio is current, commercially viable, and meets regulatory and sector needs.

2.3. Oversee the development, validation, and lifecycle management of AIM qualifications and apprenticeship standards.

2.4. Embed best practices in assessment methodology, ensuring assessments are valid, reliable, and accessible.

2.5. Develop and implement a data-driven approach to qualification performance review and improvement.

 

3.      Leadership and Management of Qualification and Assessment Teams

3.1. Oversee the work of Qualification and Assessment Developers, ensuring effective capacity and capability within the teams.

3.2. Lead and develop a high-performing team, ensuring clear objectives and accountability.

3.3.  Implement performance management processes, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

3.4. Support staff development through coaching, mentoring, and training opportunities.

3.5. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the team and across AIM

3.6. Ensure that teams are aligned to regulatory requirements and have the tools needed for success.

3.7. Lead and drive a culture of innovation, ensuring AIM’s qualifications and assessments leverage modern assessment techniques, digital solutions, and emerging best practices.

 

4.      End-Point Assessment (Apprenticeship) Leadership

4.1. Oversee AIM’s apprenticeship portfolio, ensuring all assessment materials are fit-for-purpose, industry-relevant, and meet Skills England and regulatory requirements.

4.2. Oversee the development and validation of apprenticeship assessment materials, including knowledge tests, practical assessments, and professional discussions.

4.3. Ensure apprenticeship materials and processes undergo robust quality assurance and meet sector expectations.

4.4. Maintain strong relationships with training providers, employers, and regulators, ensuring AIM’s apprenticeship services remain competitive and compliant.



Regulatory Accountability and Engagement

 

5.      Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance

5.1. Ensure that qualification and assessment development processes comply with Ofqual, Skills England, and other relevant regulatory bodies.

5.2. Oversee assessment standardisation and moderation processes, ensuring fairness and reliability in assessment decisions.

5.3. Work closely with the compliance and quality assurance teams to support audits, regulatory reporting, and continuous improvement.

5.4. Ensure AIM’s assessment delivery is robust, secure, and meets regulatory and stakeholder expectations.

 

6.      Stakeholder Engagement and Business Development

6.1. Act as AIM’s senior representative in qualification and apprenticeship stakeholder networks, engaging with employers, training providers, regulators, and industry bodies.

6.2. Develop strong external relationships to inform product development and identify commercial opportunities.

6.3. Work closely with AIM’s commercial and marketing teams to expand qualification and apprenticeship offering.

6.4. Lead employer engagement activities to ensure AIM’s qualifications and apprenticeship services align with workforce needs.

6.5. Lead on the production of reports to both the Senior Leadership team and the relevant board and Committees for own functional area

6.6. Support innovation through strategic initiatives and cross-functional collaboration.

Who we are looking for

We would love to hear from you if you have the following essential requirements/qualifications:

Ability to create high quality reports for a range of audiences

An effective communicator with individuals and groups of all levels

At least 3 years’ experience working in a senior management role

In-depth knowledge of qualification frameworks, assessment methodologies, and regulatory compliance.

Experience in developing, managing, and delivering qualifications and end-point assessments (apprenticeship).

Experience of working with regulatory authorities

Strong understanding of Ofqual, Skills England, and sector regulatory requirements.

Knowledge about government and regulator strategies and priorities

Experience leading cross-functional teams, project management, and business strategy development.

Knowledge of the education sector and the current educational policies and landscape – and how it applies to awarding organisations

Track record of engaging with employers and training providers to align qualifications with sector needs.

Experience of effectively managing projects

Strong understanding of the UK qualifications landscape, including regulatory frameworks (Ofqual, SQA, Qualifications Wales)

Knowledge of the Awarding Organisation sector

Knowledge of the vocational, apprenticeship and adult education market


It would be desirable but not essential if you also had the following:

Experience of managing external service providers 

Experience of reporting and budget management 

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
