The Assistant Construction Manager is a member of the Whitebox Team. You will report to the Whitebox Construction Manager with Oversight from the Whitebox Construction Director. You will not have any line management responsibilities.  


You will assist and support the Construction Manager with the planning and execution of site activities as part of the overall construction project objectives. Work closely with other parties within the team to understand risks and assist with the development of solutions to project issues. Undertake quality inspections and record findings. Support other team members with the provision of information through review of site materials and plant and request information from other parties as required.  


The location of the job will be site-based, initially in Plymouth, with sometime in your base office of Exeter. Typically we work within the Somerset, Devon or Cornwall region, so you would need to be mobile throughout the southwest. Travel to and from work in other offices may be required to fulfil the requirements of the role. Whitebox is committed to hybrid-working where the role allows so it may be possible for some periods of home working.

Responsibilties and Objectives:

  • Work closely with the Construction Manager to assist with the effective and efficient management of the site.  
  • Take responsibility for sections or components of the project (once experience allows) and take ownership of those parts of the build to ensure they are delivered in line with requirements.  
  • Keep track of materials and plant on site and report to the relevant member of the commercial team to ensure payments are made accordingly.  
  • Develop short-term programs and monitor them for compliance with trade partners.  
  • Deputise for the Construction Manager when they are not on-site or in meetings (where experience and training level allows).  
  • Order materials / ensure trade partners have placed orders, taking into account lead times to ensure materials are delivered to the site in time for activities.  
  • Undertake weekly project progress reports.  
  • Undertake quality inspections and record findings in suitable report format.  
  • Assist the commercial team with the production of procurement documents and selection of trade partners.  
  • Attend meetings as required and keep notes/minutes of discussions / key decisions.  
  • Engage with trade partners, establish relationships and assist in arranging trades for site attendance.  
  • Review and provide comments on trade partners' risk assessments and method statements. 
  • Provide input with the design team on buildability. 
  • Keep track of changes, and manage the information flow through the Technical Query (TQ), Change Control or Request for Information (RFI) systems. 
  • Ensure accidents or incidents are reported to the Construction Director as soon as practicable after they occur. Undertake First Aid and scene management to facilitate an investigation. Record any incident/scene through photographs.  
  • Attend and contribute to quarterly H&S Committee meetings. 


Qualifications, knowledge and experience:

  • Working towards or willing to work towards membership of a professional body such as RICS, CIOB, APM, etc. 
  • CSCS Card Holder preferred 
  • Construction or Civil Engineering HNC / HND / Degree / NVQ 6 in Site Management – Other relevant academic qualifications may also be considered for the right candidate. 
  • Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) – preferred but not essential 
  • First Aid at Works (FAW) - preferred but not essential 
  • Temporary Works Supervisor / Coordinator: Site Safety Plus (TWS / TWC) - preferred but not essential 
  • Valid UK driving license. 
  • CISRS Scaffold Inspection (Basic) - preferred but not essential 
  • Experience working in a construction environment either as a trade or junior management experience.  


Skills and Abilities:

  • Passionate about doing the right thing in relation to people, places and the planet. 
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation such as Construction (Design and Management) Regulations. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to compose and explain issues concisely to different audiences. 
  • Great interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with others at a variety of levels including professionals and clients. 
  • Experience of using planning software such as ASTA Powerproject or MS Project. 
  • Commitment to life-long learning and continual professional development. 
  • Proficient in use of IT (Microsoft Office) and mobile aps.

The position will require an element of travel to fulfil the requirements of the role, so having a full clean driving licence would be desirable.
