The Senior Commercial Manager is a member of the Whitebox Team and will report to the Whitebox Construction Director.  They will not initially have any line management responsibility but may be responsible for line management of the Assistant Commercial / Commercial Manager.  


As a Senior Commercial Manager in our organisation, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the financial aspects of our construction projects, ensuring cost efficiency, profitability, and compliance with all contractual agreements. You will be a key member of our senior management team and will collaborate closely with the wider Whitebox team and other stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes. 


The location of the job will be site-based within the Somerset, Devon or Cornwall region, with a base office of Exeter. Travel to and from work in other offices may be required to fulfil the requirements of the role. Whitebox is committed to hybrid-working where the role allows so it may be possible for some periods of home working. 


Responsibilities & Objectives:

  • Commercial Strategy: Develop and implement commercial strategies to maximize profitability while maintaining high-quality standards. 
  • Contract Management: Review, negotiate, and manage contracts with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and consultants to protect the company's interests. 
  • Cost Control: Monitor project budgets, track expenses, and identify cost-saving opportunities. Implement effective cost control measures throughout the project lifecycle. 
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate potential commercial risks associated with projects. Proactively manage claims and disputes in collaboration with legal and project teams. 
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare regular financial reports, forecasts, and performance analysis for senior management and stakeholders. 
  • Procurement: Oversee the procurement process, including subcontractor selection, negotiation, and procurement strategy. 
  • Variations and Change Orders: Evaluate and manage variations and change orders, ensuring proper documentation and approvals. 
  • Client Relationships: Foster positive relationships with clients, addressing their commercial concerns and ensuring customer satisfaction. 
  • Team Leadership: Lead and mentor the commercial team, providing guidance and support to junior staff members. 
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards, as well as internal policies and procedures. 
  • Cost Estimation: Collaborate with the wider team to provide accurate and competitive project bids. 


Qualifications, knowledge and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Business, or a related field (Master's degree preferred). 
  • Proven experience as a Commercial Manager in the construction industry, with a minimum of 10 years in a senior leadership role. 
  • Strong knowledge of construction contracts, procurement, and financial management. 
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills. 
  • Ability to analyse complex data, make strategic decisions, and solve problems effectively. 
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools, including project management and financial software. 
  • A deep understanding of the construction industry's regulations and best practices.  
  • CSCS Card Holder 
  • Valid UK driving license (no more than 6 points). 
  • Proven experience managing construction projects as no. 1 based on site for projects up to a value of £15m.  
  • Experience of management of projects using the JCT form of Contract (JCT CMA / TC) desirable

  • Act as a role model for more junior members of staff and to all Trade Contractors and offer support and guidance as required. 
  • Proficient in use of IT (Microsoft Office) and mobile aps.

The position will require an element of travel to fulfil the requirements of the role, so having a full clean driving licence would be desirable.
