As our Commercial Manager, you'll be the financial guardian of our projects, ensuring we deliver exceptional value while maintaining profitability. Based primarily in Exeter with travel to sites across Devon, Somerset, and Cornwall (with occasional projects further afield), you'll report to our Commercial Lead while collaborating closely with the wider Whitebox team.


Key Responsibilities


  • Client Value Protection: Develop commercial strategies that protect our clients' budgets while maximising project outcomes

 

  • Contract Advocacy: Review, negotiate and manage contracts and payment processes to safeguard both client and company interests

 

  • Financial Navigation: Monitor project budgets, identify cost-saving opportunities and implement effective cost control measures

 

  • Risk Anticipation: Proactively identify and mitigate potential commercial risks before they impact project delivery

 

  • Procurement Strategy: Develop and oversee procurement processes that align with our value-first approach

 

  • Change Management: Evaluate and manage variations with transparency and fairness to all parties

 

  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, designers and site teams to find innovative commercial solutions

Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Commercial Manager in construction with 5+ years post-qualification experience OR Assistant Commercial Manager/Quantity Surveyor with exceptional potential looking to advance
  • Strong knowledge of construction contracts (particularly JCT CMA/TC), procurement and financial management
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or related field preferred (but not essential if you have equivalent experience)
  • CSCS Card Holder
  • Valid UK driving license (no more than 6 points)
  • Experience managing commercial elements on projects up to £5m as lead, or as second-in-command on larger schemes
