About Paybis

Paybis is a global fintech company operating at the intersection of crypto and traditional payments. Since 2014, we've been building products that help people and businesses buy, sell, and exchange cryptocurrency. We serve 8.6M+ customers across 180+ countries and operate as a self-funded company with ~200 people across Europe, Ukraine, and the US.

We hold a MiCA CASP authorisation and a Payment Institution (PSD2) licence in Latvia, alongside FinCEN MSB and FINTRAC registrations.

About the Role

We're looking for a Payroll Manager to take full ownership of payroll at Paybis — based in Riga and reporting to the Head of Finance. This role exists to bring that under one dedicated owner, standardise the process, and build the foundation for payroll as the company keeps growing across the UK and Poland (both currently outsourced, with review oversight needed) and its global contractor base.

What You'll Be Working On

Payroll Operations

  • Own end-to-end payroll processing for Paybis's Latvia entity, plus oversight of the outsourced UK and Poland payrolls
  • Own the B2B/contractor payment cycle globally — including crypto (USDT) settlement handling — as a distinct process from employee payroll
  • Ensure accurate, on-time payroll runs every cycle, no exceptions

Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure payroll compliance with Latvian labour law, tax withholding, and social security obligations
  • Review and quality-check payroll calculations prepared by outsourced providers in the UK and Poland
  • Partner with Legal and HR on employment terms, cross-border considerations, and worker classification (employee vs. B2B contractor)
  • Partner with Finance on payroll cost accounting, accruals, and reconciliation to the general ledger

Systems & Process

  • Own the payroll system(s)/HRIS — selection, implementation, and administration
  • Administer benefits tied to payroll (medical insurance, L&D budget, etc.)
  • Own payroll data privacy and security in line with GDPR

What We're Looking For

Must-have:

  • Proven payroll management experience, ideally across more than one country
  • Experience with both direct employee payroll and B2B/contractor payment structures
  • Comfortable managing and reviewing the work of outsourced payroll providers
  • Fluent English and Latvian
  • High ownership and autonomy — this is an individual-contributor role from day one

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience in fintech, crypto, or another fast-growing company
  • Experience with UK and/or Polish payroll
  • Familiarity with payroll/EOR platforms (e.g. Deel, Remote, Rippling)

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary, performance-based bonus
  • Direct ownership of a function that's being built from the ground up
  • Medical insurance, L&D budget, English classes, regular team-building activities
  • A fast-paced, self-funded fintech with no investor-driven pressure

Interview Process

  1. HR screen (30–40 min) — career narrative, communication style, autonomy fit
  2. Hiring manager interview (60–90 min) — technical payroll depth, past ownership examples, chemistry

What Success Looks Like

By month 3: Full map of jurisdictions, providers, and classification arrangements in use; a standardised monthly payroll calendar and checklist; clean handoff process with Finance established.

At 6 months: Payroll runs on time, every cycle, across all jurisdictions with no manual firefighting; EOR/PEO relationships formally managed with clear cost and service benchmarks; worker-classification risk actively monitored with Legal.

At 12 months: Payroll process is fully standardised and scalable to new countries without ad hoc rebuilding each time; payroll-to-ledger reconciliation is clean and fast for Finance's close process; the function no longer depends on generalist HR/Finance staff for day-to-day execution.
