Reports to: Head of Bioprocess Engineering

Principal Duties and Objectives
- Working within a multi-disciplinary research team to support the planning, organising and delivery of R&D pharmaceutical process development programmes.
- Design and establish scale down lab models for pharmaceutical unit operations to understand and optimise manufacturing scale operations.
- Develop and evolve digital workflows for process monitoring, data acquisition, chemometric analysis and integration.
- Lead the development and implementation of new technologies (e.g. PAT) for upstream, downstream bioprocess unit operations.
- Prepare and review technical presentations and report material, and present the issues, results and project progress to clients as required.
- Demonstrate the use of problem-solving skills requiring the application of engineering principles, calculations, and computational methods in approaching technical challenges.
- Adopt, maintain, and improve on APC’s engineering workflows and their incorporation into the day-to-day execution of commercial research projects and internal innovation strands.
- Ensure that operation to GLP standard within a R&D laboratory is always maintained.
- Support the execution of commercial and innovation R&D projects using engineering modelling tools such as CFD, Matlab, Python, MVDA, Dynochem etc.
- Author and review technical reports.
- Ensure that safe working practices are adhered to in line with relevant local and legal requirements.
- Liaise with the Laboratory Coordinator, Facilities Supervisor, Area Owners and Equipment Owners as required to maintain a shared awareness of the issues requiring attention within the laboratories.
- Where applicable, coach mentor and train junior team members.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum of 3+ years’ industry experience in process development Engineering or Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MSAT) support (if PhD qualified); or Minimum of 5+ years’ industry experience (if MSc qualified). Minimum of 7+ years’ industry experience (if bachelor’s qualified).
- Skilled in the application of chemical engineering fundamentals across upstream and/or downstream bioprocessing.
- Strong understanding of Quality by Design (QbD), Design of Experiments (DoE), and process characterization. Experience in the scale-up/down and tech transfer of USP and/or DSP process unit operations
- Experience with statistical analysis software (JMP, Minitab, R, Python, or MATLAB).
- Ability to work in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment
- Self-motivated with demonstrated project management skills
- Excellent technical communications skills, with previous technical presentation experience
Desirable Skills
- Experience with spectroscopy (Raman, NIR, FTIR, UV-Vis) or other PAT technologies.
- Experience in the development of chemometric models and supporting their implementation.
- Experience with scale-up techniques for processes from laboratory to plant scale and tech transfer activities.
- Knowledge of mechanistic modelling software such as gPROMS, Aspen Plus, SIMCA, MATLAB SimBiology, or similar platforms.
- Familiarity with GMP, FDA, EMA, and ICH regulatory requirements.
