WHAT WE NEED

Working as a member of the maintenance team, the Apprentice Maintenance Engineer will work under the supervision of a Maintenance Engineer providing engineering skills in maintenance, repair and installation functions of Port of Aberdeen’s plant, equipment and infrastructure.


The apprentice will attend a training establishment as required to complete a Modern Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering.


The apprentice will gain hands on operational experience by working closely with the maintenance team assisting with the following duties:


  • Work as part of a team supporting the delivery of the maintenance programme across the Port of Aberdeen.
  • Work as part of a team undertaking periodic maintenance, inspection, service and repair and the installation of new equipment in a variety of port buildings and plant including cranes, vehicles, roll-on/roll-off facilities, small craft, generators, small plant, tools, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
  • Ensure that all work carried out is done in a safe and efficient manner and in line with PoA Health, Safety and Environment policies and procedures and current legislation. Ensuring any incidents are recorded and reported appropriately.
  • Ensure that all working areas are kept in a safe and tidy manner.
  • Input to the preparation and review of risk assessments. 
  • Undertake work with equipment, tools, machinery and plant; some tasks involve driving and operating plant and vehicles.
  • Supply and update daily service tasks and instruct repair/replacement as required.
  • Continual update of service records, ensuring they are recorded in the CMMS as required.
  • Liaise with PoA staff and third party contractors regarding possible install/project opportunities.
  • Working in conjunction with other members of the Engineering, Operations, Marine and SHEQ teams and other PoA staff, contractors or customers as required.
  • May be required to work in inclement weather and at height, and some work will be on or over water. 
  • Contribute to and support a positive safety culture to continually achieve zero harm.
  • Carry out any other duties which might reasonably be expected by the Maintenance Manager.


SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated interest in mechanics, or an interest in diagnosing and repairing faults.
  • Willingness and ability to work towards Modern Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering. 
  • Achieved National 5 qualification in Maths and ideally National 4 in a technical subject (e.g. Engineering Science, Design and Manufacture)
  • Ability to work well within a team.
  • Be pro-active and able to demonstrate initiative.
  • A sound knowledge of the importance of Health and Safety procedures, and a proactive approach to ensuring safety.
  • Demonstrate a methodical approach to problem solving.
  • The ability to work effectively in a demanding environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues.
  • Good IT skills.

HOURS AND SALARY

37 hours per week, Monday to Friday


Salary £19,000 per annum
