The role
New College intends to appoint a graduate student of the University to the position of Junior Dean starting at the beginning of Michaelmas Term 2024.
New College has four Junior Deans who support the Dean, the Assistant Dean, and the Porters in maintaining security and good order within the College; they may be called upon to act in a number of capacities within the College but are particularly required to participate in a duty rota that operates between 0th week and 9th week inclusive of each term. The duty rota requires the Junior Dean to be on call for at least 36 hours per week*.
The Junior Deans play a key role in assisting the Porters, and they are expected to react promptly but sensitively to any unacceptable behaviour. The Junior Deans are not encouraged to be involved in pastoral affairs relating to Junior Members; these are the responsibility of the College’s pastoral team.
The Junior Deans are required to reside in College – this is free of charge – and the accommodation offered is suitable for single occupancy only. A stipend of (currently) £1,749 per annum is paid to supplement their other sources of income. Junior Deans have full SCR dining rights (lunch and dinner); they also have Rights of Commons entitling them to free meals in Hall. Applicants who are not members of New College would be expected to migrate.
