Principal Duties and Objectives


  • Lead the technical delivery of R&D pharmaceutical and/or biopharmaceutical projects, ensuring excellence in execution. Oversee experimental workplans in line with APC’s Digital Engineering workflows, collaborating with engineers and scientists to develop innovative, effective solutions.
  • Utilize advanced engineering workflows and modelling tools (e.g., CFD, Matlab, Python, R/Shiny, gProms, MVDA, Dynochem) to develop robust, safe and sustainable pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical processes. Facilitate successful technology transfer and develop scaled-down process models for laboratory and simulation-based optimization and troubleshooting experiments.
  • Solve complex technical challenges using engineering principles, computational methods, and data-driven insights, driving an Engineering-first mindset.
  • Deliver clear, well-structured technical presentations and reports, effectively communicating project progress and results to clients. Ensure high quality documentation, including electronic lab book records.
  • Develop and implement new digital engineering techniques and workflows to enhance project outcomes and business effectiveness. Contribute to APC’s continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain and improve on APC’s engineering workflows, ensuring seamless integration into commercial research projects and internal innovation programmes.
  • Mentor, coach and train junior team members, fostering a culture of professional growth, collaboration and continuous learning.


Laboratory Duties


  • Provide R&D laboratory support across APC’s Small and/or Large Molecule portfolios by collaborating with scientists, analysts, and engineer, both internally and externally.
  • Conduct process development activities for Small and/or Large Molecule reaction and purification unit operations.
  • Ensure adherence to GLP standards within the R&D laboratory and maintain a consistently high level of operational excellence.
  • Ensure that safe working practices are adhered to in compliance with relevant local and legal safety requirements.
  • Liaise with the Laboratory Coordinator, Facilities Supervisor, Area Owners and Equipment Owners as required to ensure shared awareness and resolution of laboratory issues requiring attention.


Minimum Requirements


  • PhD in Chemical or Bio Engineering or related area; or Master’s in Chemical or Bio Engineering or related area; or Bachelor’s in Chemical or Bio Engineering or related area. 
  • Minimum of 3+ years industry experience in pharmaceutical process research and development (if PhD qualified); or Minimum of 5+ years industry experience (if Masters qualified); or Minimum of 7+ years industry experience (if Bachelors qualified). 
  • Experience in the use of statistical analysis and data driven computational methods, and engineering simulations tools (for e.g. CFD, Matlab, Python, R/Shiny, gProms, MVDA, Dynochem).
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated project management skills.
  • Excellent technical communications and presentation abilities.
  • Capable of effectively disseminating information to research team and leadership.


Desirable Skills


  • People management experience.
  • Proficient in PAT for the development of pharmaceutical and/or biopharmaceutical processes (for e.g. tools such as FBRM, ATR-FTIR, Raman spectroscopy).
  • Proficient in working across various engineering unit ops for pharmaceutical and/or biopharmaceutical process (for e.g. crystallization, drying, TFF, chromatography).
  • Extensive experience in DoE and QbD methodologies for process development.
  • Experience with scale-up techniques for processes from laboratory to plant scale.
