About Paybis

Paybis is a global crypto exchange and fiat on/off-ramp, founded in 2014 and headquartered in Riga. We are self-funded, about 200 people across Europe, Ukraine and the US, and serve around 8.5 million users in more than 180 countries. Most of our volume comes from B2B infrastructure: ramp, accounts, IBANs, payouts, custody and liquidity for other businesses.

The role

We are looking for a hands-on Senior Accountant to own the books of Paybis Money, our four fiat companies: a Latvian EMI, a UK EMI, and fiat entities in the US and Canada. The US entity is already trading. The two entities in the licensing pipeline, so your first months are about building their accounting properly before volumes arrive.

This is an individual-contributor role with clear ownership. Our accounting team is split into crypto and fiat streams, and each accountant owns their entities end to end, with no overlap. You will report to our Accounting and Financial Reporting Lead and work closely with Treasury, external tax advisers and auditors.

Key responsibilities

  • Own day-to-day accounting for the four fiat entities in Xero, from set-up through steady state.
  • Run EMI-specific accounting and controls: safeguarding and client-money reconciliations together with Treasury, inputs for own-funds and capital-adequacy calculations, and EMI regulatory reporting to Latvijas Banka and the FCA end to end.
  • Deliver the month-end close for each entity: bank reports mapped by counterparty and intercompany, accruals, prepayments, loans, payroll entries and FX revaluation.
  • Prepare monthly entity-level management accounts, review P&L and balance-sheet movements, and investigate unusual items before sign-off.
  • Own local statutory and tax compliance. In Latvia: VAT data for our advisers, statistical reports, benefits-in-kind returns and annual accounts. In the UK: data for our tax adviser, annual accounts, Companies House and HMRC deadlines. In the US and Canada: book-keeping and year-end inputs under local GAAP.
  • Record and reconcile intercompany flows with Treasury across our Polish, Latvian, UK and US entities, and support transfer pricing documentation.
  • Check that supplier invoices meet local tax requirements before payment, including through our Payhawk approval flow.
  • Provide consolidation inputs, audit schedules and answers to auditor queries for your entities.
  • Document close procedures and controls for each new entity so they scale after licensing.

What you bring

  • Hands-on EMI accounting in the EU or UK. You have personally worked on safeguarding and client-money reconciliations and the prudential inputs for a live EMI, and owned EMI regulatory returns end to end (Latvijas Banka, the FCA or another EU national competent authority). The country matters less than having done it yourself for a live EMI.
  • 5+ years of in-house accounting with independent general ledger ownership and month-end close.
  • Strong IFRS (UK GAAP / FRS 102 also welcome) and a working understanding of US GAAP simplifications. You can analyse a new transaction, decide the accounting treatment and document your position.
  • Multi-entity, multi-currency accounting, including intercompany reconciliation and FX revaluation.
  • A solid grasp of group consolidation, including intercompany eliminations and foreign-currency translation.
  • Strong balance-sheet ownership: account reconciliations, ageing analysis, investigation of unreconciled items and balance substantiation.
  • Experience reconciling high-volume payment or operational data to bank accounts and the general ledger.
  • A background in fintech or payments.
  • Fluent English.
  • Existing right to work and residence in the EU/EEA or the UK.

You enjoy building: setting up a ledger, a close calendar and controls from scratch, rather than running a process someone else built.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of Latvian statutory and tax requirements (VAT, statistical reports, benefits in kind) or Latvian language, since this role covers all Latvian filings
  • Experience setting up accounting for a newly licensed entity
  • Experience running a multi-country filing calendar with external tax advisers
  • Xero, plus ERP or reconciliation tooling
  • Exposure to crypto, or to international groups with heavy intercompany flows
  • A Big 4 or audit background

Your first months

  • Days 1–30, understand and set up. Review licence status and regulator requirements per entity. Set up the chart of accounts, bank mapping and close calendar in Xero. Build the statutory and tax filing calendar with our external advisers.
  • Days 31–60, first closes. Run the first month-end close for each entity with activity, agree the safeguarding reconciliation design with Treasury and map intercompany flows.
  • Days 61–90, own it. Close independently and on time, deliver the first EMI regulatory inputs, and document close and safeguarding procedures.

By month 6, all four entities close on time, safeguarding reconciliations run for both EMIs with no unexplained breaks, no statutory, tax or regulatory deadline is missed, and intercompany balances agree every month. By month 12, the first annual accounts and audits are done and processes hold steady at post-licence volumes.

What we offer

  • Performance based financial bonus
  • Fintech + crypto domain — multi-entity, multi-currency, always evolving
  • Remote-first with high autonomy and minimal micromanagement
  • Clear end-to-end ownership of four entities, with no overlap of responsibilities
