WHAT YOU WILL DO

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:


We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated In-House Legal Officer to join our legal team at Mogo Auto ltd. The ideal candidate will have a strong legal background, with specific expertise in compliance, regulatory affairs and a thorough understanding of Kenya’s regulatory landscape.

As Legal Officer, you will work closely with internal stakeholders to provide legal counsel, develop compliance frameworks and navigate the regulatory environment to mitigate risks, protect the company’s interest and promote lawful business practices.

  • Provide timely, effective, and practical legal advice to senior management and various business units on a wide range of legal issues, with a focus on compliance, regulatory matters, and business operations.
  • Ensure the company’s operations comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies, especially those related to microfinance and fintech institutions.
  • Conduct research into governance and regulatory compliance and monitor changes in the regulatory landscape.
  • Drafting legal opinions on a wide range of compliance aspects in respect of new or amended legislation and regulatory guidelines that affect the company’s procedures, policies and process requirements in respect of internal and Regulatory requirements.
  • Monitoring and ensuring legal compliance whilst advising the business and adopting the required changes to internal policies and procedures.
  • Manage any legal disputes or claims, working closely with external counsel when necessary to resolve matters efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Attending various meetings and ensuring production of high-quality paperwork by preparing the agenda and papers, attending the briefing meetings of the various departments and disseminating the matters arising and required action points, and drafting the minutes.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate various contracts, agreements and other relevant legal documents, ensuring that all terms and conditions are legally sound and protect the company's interests. Including but not limited to managing the legal documents registry and ensuring proper filing and maintenance of the database/registry and conduct checks to ensure it is up to date.
  • Work closely with external legal counsel, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to ensure the company adheres to industry standards and best practices.
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of internal policies and procedures to support compliance and regulatory obligations. Assist in drafting, reviewing, editing and maintaining the Company’s policies, codes of practice, and procedures to enhance accountability, transparency and equity in legal services.
  • Conduct training for internal teams on legal, compliance, and regulatory matters to ensure ongoing awareness and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Assess legal risks across various business areas and implement strategies to mitigate potential liabilities.
  • Any other duties assigned.


WHAT YOU NEED


EDUCATION:

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized institution.
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law.
  • Admitted to the Roll of Advocates in Kenya.
  • Current practicing Certificate.


EXPERIENCE:

  • 4-5 years of proven experience as a legal professional, ideally with a focus on regulatory compliance and financial services.
  • Experience working in-house or with financial institutions, particularly within the microfinance sector, or regulators, is highly preferred.


COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong understanding of the Kenyan regulatory framework, including CBK guidelines, microfinance institutions regulations, data privacy, and consumer protection laws.
  • Excellent legal drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Experience in dispute resolution.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements and translate them into practical solutions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and legal research tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to think critically and strategically.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to identifying legal risks and solutions. Results-oriented, self-motivated, self-starter, who is flexible and adaptable to rapid change and has the ability to work in a fast-paced, high demand environment.
