WHAT WE NEED

We have an exciting opportunity for a current student to join our Safety, Health, Environment and Quality team on a one year placement as Environmental Assistant Intern.


The Intern will work closely with our Environmental Manager, assisting with our Environmental Management System and monitoring our progress against our ambitious 2040 Net Zero Strategy.


This role will be ideal for a student seeking a placement year after completing the second or third year of studies in an Environmental Science degree or related discipline allowing them to put their learning into practice gaining valuable working experience before returning to university to complete their degree.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of environmental processes and procedures.
  • Support the calculation of the carbon footprint by gathering and analysing the necessary data from various sources, ensuring accuracy and comprehensiveness in the process. This includes coordinating with different departments to obtain relevant information and helping compile data for reporting purposes.
  • Promote the Net Zero Strategy and drive sustainable thinking across the business, with a key focus on energy efficiency.
  • Regularly update and utilise the Power BI Net Zero trend dashboard to monitor energy trends and deliver monthly reports to port staff.
  • Organise and oversee water quality surveys at the harbour, review and assess the findings from consultant reports, and communicate the results to staff as needed.
  • Assist in the investigation of environmental incidents and near misses.
  • Design and conduct training and advisory sessions for personnel and key stakeholders to promote sustainability within the port.
  • Support assurance activities to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and relevant standards, including ISO 14001 and ISO 50001.


SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Field and practical experience in environmental monitoring
  • Have general knowledge and understanding of GIS.
  • Ability to work near/on water and on a floating craft.
  • Successfully completed second year of a degree course in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering or related subject.
  • A valid driving licence, as occasional travel between sites or to external meetings may be necessary.


SALARY AND HOURS

Salary £23,625 per year


Full time, 36.5 hours Monday to Friday


One year fixed term duration
