WHAT WE NEED

We are looking for an experienced pilot to join our team, with an aptitude for ship-handling, capable of conducting acts of pilotage, as required under the Port of Aberdeen Pilotage Directions. 

The Marine Pilot will support the Harbour Master and team in facilitating the safe and efficient handling of shipping as required by the Aberdeen Harbour Acts and all relevant sections of the Port Marine Safety Code.

 

The post holder will be responsible for the safe and efficient conduct of navigation of vessels which request the services of an authorised pilot and will conduct the safe movement of vessels from sea and berth in accordance with appropriate procedures.


SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pilotage experience.
  • Seagoing experience as a Chief Officer or Mate. Chief Mate II/2 (unlimited) or equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge of Port Marine Safety Code and its effective application.
  • Understanding of Pilotage, VTS, Vessel berthing and mooring, ship handling characteristics, charts and surveying.
  • Basic Sea Survival or PST.
  • STCW / RYA 1st Aid.
  • ENG1 Medical (or ability to obtain this).
  • Understanding the complexity of working in extreme weather.
  • Understanding the complexity of working and covering 24 hour shifts 365 days roster.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels, with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must be willing to undertake and give further training as necessary.
  • Appropriate understanding of the legal and regulatory environment that Statutory and Competent Harbour Authorities are required to operate within.
  • Understanding of the operation of a major port facility.
  • Full driving licence.


SALARY AND HOURS

Salary from £83,895 per annum, increasing through bands based on progression through the Pilotage Authorisation Classes for the Port District.

Hours average 37 per week on a rota of 8 or 9 hour shifts including night shifts.
