Hours of work: 40 hours p/w (Mon - Friday, 8:30am - 5pm)


Salary: £40,000.00 - £45,000.00 per annum


Purpose of the role

The Health & Safety Lead Auditor is responsible for providing independent assurance that the organisation’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) is effective, compliant, and continuously improving in line with ISO 45001 requirements.


The role leads internal audits, supports regulatory compliance, investigates health and safety incidents, and works collaboratively with stakeholders to embed a strong safety culture across the organisation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Procedures

 

Internal Audits

  • Lead and deliver internal audits of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System in accordance with ISO 45001 and the organisation’s audit programme
  • Assess compliance with health and safety legislation, internal policies, procedures, and safe systems of work
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of risk assessments, controls, and operational practices across sites and functions
  • Prepare clear, evidence-based audit reports detailing findings, risks, non-conformities, and opportunities for improvement
  • Track corrective and preventive actions to completion and support departments in addressing audit findings effectively

 

Stakeholder Communication and Engagement

  • Act as a key point of contact for health and safety audit-related matters across the organisation
  • Engage with managers, employees, and contractors during audits to explain requirements and promote understanding of health and safety responsibilities
  • Prepare and present health and safety audit outcomes, trends, and performance information to senior management and relevant stakeholders
  • Liaise with external bodies, including regulators and enforcing authorities, where required
  • Promote a positive, proactive health and safety culture focused on prevention and shared responsibility

 

Incident Investigation and Emergency Preparedness

  • Support and lead investigations into health and safety incidents, accidents, and near misses
  • Identify root causes and contributing factors using structured investigation techniques
  • Support the development, review, and testing of emergency plans for incidents such as fires, floods, or other serious hazards
  • Ensure lessons learned from incidents and audits are communicated and embedded across the organisation

 

Innovation and Continuous Improvement

  • Analyse audit findings, incident data, and performance metrics to identify trends and systemic risks
  • Support the development and implementation of initiatives to improve health and safety performance and risk control
  • Encourage innovative approaches to hazard identification, risk management, and audit techniques
  • Review health and safety practices against legislative changes, industry standards, and emerging best practice

 

Health & Safety Systems and Governance

  • Support the maintenance and development of health and safety policies, procedures, and safe systems of work
  • Ensure change management processes support the integrity of the OHSMS
  • Contribute to management review inputs relating to health and safety performance, risks, and improvement actions
  • Support readiness for external audits, inspections, and certification activities

 

Line Management and Leadership

  • Provide line management, mentoring, and professional guidance to team members
  •  Allocate audit activities and workloads to ensure effective coverage and timely delivery of the audit programme
  • Support the development of team capability through coaching, feedback and identification of training needs
  • Set clear expectations, monitor performance, and support a consistent, high-quality approach to auditing and compliance activities
  • Lead by example, demonstrating professional, ethical, and objective audit behaviours
  • Deliver training to internal staff and issue safety briefings

  • Work closely with your line manager and team members
  • Collaborate with others, attending meetings as required
  • Supporting team members and provide on-the-job training
  • Provide cover for other staff as agreed by line manager

  • Ensure all records are maintained and kept up-to-date according to company policies and procedures

 Professional

  • Maintain a good understanding of the legislation of the contract
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 45001 and occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Proven experience leading internal health and safety audits.
  • Excellent analytical, investigative, and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and confidently with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to influence behavioural change and promote safe working practices.
  • Organised, objective, and detail-focused with a pragmatic approach to compliance.
  • ISO 45001 Lead Auditor qualification.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.
  • Experience working within regulated, operational, or multi-site environments.
