Contracts Manager

Job Purpose:

Project managing each contract to ensure that it is completed as planned, efficiently and effectively, and specifically on time, to the correct quality standards, and within the allocated budget. 

Responsibilities:

  • Complete and submit surveys for potential work to the commercial department to allow for pricing
  • Forecasting of all projects in terms of time, quality and adherence to standards, and cost
  • Overall progress management of each project assigned in terms of time, quality and adherence to standards, and cost
  • Providing project direction, focus and consistency across multiple programmes
  • Providing updates on all aspects of project progress to identified stakeholders including clients, the senior management team and those in the Retail and wider Associated Asphalt Contracting Limited team who need this information to progress their own work
  • Identification and reporting of any safety or environmental concerns following our internal process and legislative requirements as appropriate
  • Reporting any agreed changes to scope of works or programmes to line manager and QS to allow for EWN’s (early warning notice) and CE’s (compensation event) to be raised where necessary
  • Ensuring that teams are regularly updated using Tool Box Talks and daily Safety Briefings
  • Managing variations and valuations (submission and settlement)
  • Managing client expectations and proactively resolving client concerns effectively and efficiently
  • Management of relevant sub-contractors and site visitors to meet all HSEQ requirements
  • Ensure that all site documentation is completed as required by Associated Asphalt Contracting Limited and maintained, to ensure the sites are complaint with Company and legislative requirements
  • Programming the area’s workload for site managers and teams to ensure sufficient turnover

Accountabilities:

  • Identifying and proactively managing risks to HSEQ and the commercial viability of each project
  • Management of resources according to planned and agreed scope of works
  • Ensure all KPIs and deadlines are met within the programmed works
  • The safety of all employees, contractors, visitors, and members of the public at the project site 

External relationships and Communication:

  • Develop and maintain existing relationships with all clients
  • Identify new opportunities to build and further strengthen relationships with potential clients
  • Attendance at tender interviews and presentations where necessary
  • Communication with key stakeholders within the supply chain related to each project

Internal relationships and Communication:

  • Effective management of the teams based at the relevant sites to include regular site visits both day and night to provide support to the site Supervisors and Foremen and lead by example
  • Establish regular two-way communication channels with the site Supervisors and Foremen and their team members
  • Providing the QS team with information and support where required, ensuring accurate detailed records of operations are submitted daily
  • Working collaboratively between departments where required 

Key measures & targets:

  • Site completion ratings – consistency of a minimum of good scores when the project is handed over
  • Customer feedback – rated as “good” or excellent by client
  • Margin returns - % of jobs returning the desired value return – to be targeted for each project assigned and a key measure in first six months
  • Audit scores – Client targets of 92% and above at all times.
  • Value engineering efficiencies – evidence of identification of potential savings through value engineering, recognised against first glance returns and final project outturn
  • Drive new business and repeat business with clients – gross sales value to cover cost of employment in first six months

Education & Training - Essential:

  • CSCS Supervisor Gold / Black Card
  • SMSTS
  • UK driving licence – less than 9 points
  • Excellent understanding of reading design plans / drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent understanding of current HSEQ legislation
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Numerate
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Education & Training – Desirable:

  • First Aid training
  • Educated to GCSE Level or equivalent
  • Construction related HNC, HND or Degree
  • Project management qualification e.g. APM, Prince 2, Agile etc.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience – Essential:

  • Experiencing of working in the construction sector
  • Proven relationship building experience with stakeholders
  • Commercial Awareness and knowledge of budgets
  • Understanding of key operational cost drivers and P&L or cost centre management
  • Clear thinker, able to prioritise, problem-solve and find creative solutions.
  • Excellent analytical and organisational skills
  • Willingness to continue professional development to maintain and enhance skills and qualifications
  • Proven leadership skills and excellent people management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in an approachable and constructive manner.

  • Experience of working in the construction sector in a Retail environment
