What we need

Reporting to the CEO, the Head of SHEQ will develop and lead the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality strategy in delivery of Port of Aberdeen’s strategic plan.


The role will provide leadership and direction to the SHEQ team in the implementation, management and evaluation of the integrated management system and will promote the continual improvement in the health, safety and environmental culture and performance of the port.


As a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) the Head of SHEQ will work closely with the other ELT members to define and deliver the strategic priorities of the port, assisting in communicating them throughout the organisation, whilst supporting and nurturing a culture of empowerment amongst port employees. Examples of the Strategic priorities requiring support are funding applications, innovation initiatives and the Port’s net zero strategy.

Key knowledge, skills, qualifications and experience

  • Degree qualified in a relevant discipline along with NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
  • Member of Institute of Environmental Management Assessment (IEMA) / chartered member of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
  • Previous experience in a Health, Safety or Environment leadership role, ideally within a port environment
  • Solid understanding of health and safety legislation and its impact on the port
  • An understanding of emerging policy frameworks, especially Marine planning.
  • Previous involvement in acquisition of environmental licence and consents. 
  • Ability to influence all levels across the organisation and with key external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to develop positive working relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Qualified auditor / Lead auditor
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)

Salary and hours

Up to £83,000 per annum, dependent on experience.


36.5 hours per week.
