Overview

The National Director will play a pivotal role in leading and overseeing Barnabas Aid’s work within New Zealand. Reporting to the International CEO and accountable to the local National Board, the National Director will be personally accountable for delivering measurable growth in prayer engagement, supporter participation and sustainable income generation for the persecuted and suffering church, fostering a network of engaged supporters and expanding the organisation’s reach into Christian communities across New Zealand.


The National Director will build, lead and inspire a focussed team ensuring the strategy, delivery and performance fulfils Barnabas Aid’s mission effectively and efficiently within New Zealand.


This position requires strategic leadership, charisma, excellent communication skills, and a passion for supporting the global church.


The National Director will work closely with the International CEO, International Chief Outreach Officer and other key stakeholders to ensure alignment with the global vision of Barnabas Aid while owning national strategy, delivery, performance management and outcomes. The role involves overseeing all aspects of the national team, including outreach, growth, and operational execution of various campaigns. Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Management:

·      Build, lead and manage a dynamic, passionate and focussed national team, fostering a collaborative and mission-driven work environment, whilst embedding a culture of accountability, simplicity and continuous improvement across the team.

·      Set and own clear and transparent objectives aligned to the Barnabas strategy, with clear performance metrics, and support the team in achieving these goals through mentoring, guidance, and performance management, whilst also taking corrective action when targets are not being met.

·      Monitor and evaluate engagement initiatives through KPIs, providing regular updates and reports through the CRM.

·      Develop, own and monitor the local budget and reporting through the financial system, ensuring all activities are financially stewarded with excellence.


Spiritual Leadership:

·      Actively contribute to nurturing a Christ-centred and prayerful culture across the organisation.

·      Model servant leadership, humility, and integrity in line with the teachings of Jesus.

·      Encourage and support the spiritual wellbeing of team members, creating space for prayer, reflection, and faith-based dialogue.

·      Engage meaningfully with the organisation’s mission, ensuring all strategies are aligned with Barnabas’ faith-based values.

·      Participate in, and lead, daily devotional activities.


Outreach and Supporter Engagement:

·      Develop and execute focussed strategies with defined growth targets for prayer engagement, supporter numbers, speaking activity and income.

·      Cultivate and maintain relationships with supporters, churches, major donors and other stakeholders to ensure continued financial backing.

·      Ensure systemic donor care and clear feedback loops.


Campaigns and Awareness:

·      Raise awareness about the needs of suffering and persecuted Christians through effective communication and compelling, outcome-focussed campaigns.

·      Host and support regular prayer meetings and prayer events across New Zealand.

·      Mobilise local churches and communities to support the organisation’s initiatives through prayer, giving, and volunteering.


Speaking Engagements:

·      Lead and drive the national speaking strategy to promote Barnabas Aid’s mission, including churches, schools, conferences, Christian networks and other community events.

·      Deliver a structured plan to contribute to Barnabas Aid’s global target of speaking in 30 churches every Sunday, ensuring that the message of support for suffering and persecuted Christians is communicated widely.


Income Generation and Encouraging Generosity:

·      Own national income targets.

·      Cultivate relationships with potential supporters and donors, particularly high net worth individuals.

·      Plan and execute intentional and data-informed regional fundraising initiatives, including events and campaigns.

·      Encourage financial and other resource donations, ensuring effective donor stewardship.

·      Create and deliver national donor retention strategy.


Collaboration with the International Leadership Team:

·      Work closely with the International CEO, the ELT and other National Directors to ensure alignment of national efforts with the global strategy, vision and priorities of Barnabas Aid.

·      Participate in international meetings and contribute to the development of global outreach strategies.


Reporting and Accountability:

·      Provide regular, accurate and insightful reports on progress to the National Board and the International CEO, ensuring transparency and accountability in all activities.

·      Use data, reporting and insight to drive informed decision making.

·      Ensure that all funds raised are used effectively and efficiently in line with Barnabas Aid’s mission and values.


Strategic Planning and Execution:

·      Lead the development and execution of a strategic plan for the national office, setting clear targets for growth and impact.

·      Monitor and evaluate progress toward objectives, adjusting as necessary to ensure success.


Volunteer Development and Engagement:

·      Recruit, train, and mentor volunteers to support engagement activities, providing resources and regular communication.

·      Coordinate volunteer activities to align with regional and organisational strategies.


Networking and Partnerships:

·      Build and maintain relationships with local churches, Christian organisations, and other stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships.

·      Act as the public face of Barnabas Aid in New Zealand, promoting the organisation’s mission and expanding its reach with credibility, warmth and conviction.


Event and International Collaboration:

·      Contribute to planning and attend national conferences, festivals, and events.

·      Participate in international trips to visit project partners, experience first-hand the impact of Barnabas Aid's work, and attend international leadership team meetings.


Operational Flexibility:

·      Manage a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and extensive travel.

·      Ensure tasks are completed efficiently, including additional assignments as needed.

Skills and experience

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

o  Proven experience in a senior leadership role, with a strong track record of managing teams and driving results.

o  Close alignment to Barnabas Aid’s values of diligence and effectiveness, above reproach and at all times, being respectful and compassionate.

o  Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to represent Barnabas Aid to a wide range of stakeholders, including church leaders, supporters, and the media. Proficient in public speaking and delivering impactful and motivational presentations in church settings.

o  Strong experience in fundraising and developing strategies to engage and retain supporters and donors.

o  A track record of securing financial backing for charitable causes and managing relationships with individual and institutional supporters.

o  Strong analytical and strategic planning skills with the ability to develop and execute effective plans that align with Barnabas Aid’s global goals.

o  Awareness and sensitivity to global issues affecting Christians, particularly those who are suffering or persecuted.

o  Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets and financial reporting, ensuring resources are used effectively and in line with organisational goals.

o  Proven ability to lead and motivate a team, fostering an environment of collaboration, accountability, and excellence.

o  Willingness and ability to travel both within New Zealand and internationally as required to fulfil the responsibilities of the role.

o  Strong organisational, multitasking, and problem-solving abilities.

o  High confidence using CRM to manage performance, transparency and reporting.

o  Strong IT Skills including the use of Microsoft Suite of Products, understanding of file management, navigating operating systems, and using productivity tools.

o  Excellent networking skills.


Desirable:

o  Experience in Christian ministry, non-profit, or charity sectors.

o  Proven experience in community influence, church engagement, fundraising or related fields. Familiarity with digital tools and social media platforms.

o  Evidence of further education and an ability to engage diverse audiences.
